ROCK SPRINGS, N.M. — The Navajo Nation Division of Transportation (NNDOT) is advancing the Chee Dodge Elementary Access Road Project, a key infrastructure improvement aimed at increasing safety and accessibility along U.S. 491 in McKinley County.
The $1,088,938 project has been awarded to FNF Construction, Inc., led by President Robert W. Bottcher. Construction will begin once the Notice to Proceed is issued and is scheduled for completion by September 30, 2026.
Improvements will include roadway widening with added shoulders, construction of acceleration and deceleration lanes, concrete median upgrades with landscape gravel, installation of sloped curb and gutter, and enhanced signing and striping at critical intersections. These upgrades are expected to improve traffic flow and provide safer access for students, families, and school staff traveling to Chee Dodge Elementary School.
Funded through grants K193082 and K233011, the project was previously bid twice in March 2023 and May 2024 with limited contractor response. To address funding considerations and move the project forward, it was divided into two phases.
“This project is about protecting our children and making daily travel safer for families and school employees,” said Buu Nygren. “Investing in safe access to our schools reflects our commitment to community well-being and long-term infrastructure for future generations.”
The Navajo Nation Division of Transportation remains committed to strengthening infrastructure and ensuring safe, reliable access to educational facilities across the Navajo Nation.
