We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of two Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers who gave their lives in the line of duty.
Late last night, February 4, the Western Air Rescue DPS helicopter known as Ranger 56, based in Kingman, was responding to assist the Flagstaff Police Department during an active shooter incident when the aircraft crashed. Both crew members on board were killed. This is a profound loss felt across Arizona and throughout the entire public safety community.
Ranger 56 and its crew worked side by side with deputies, Search and Rescue volunteers, and emergency responders on countless trainings and missions. Their willingness to answer the call—to respond, to support, and to protect—reflects the very best of public service.
On behalf of the Navajo Nation, I extend my deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, and colleagues of these fallen troopers. Their ultimate sacrifice reflects unwavering commitment, courage, and dedication to protecting others. Their legacy of service will not be forgotten.
We stand united in mourning with the Arizona Department of Public Safety family and all who served alongside these brave public servants. May their families, friends, and fellow first responders find strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time.
