WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — Recognizing the growing role of business leadership, entrepreneurship, and career readiness among Navajo youth, President Buu Nygren met on November 17 with the Window Rock High School DECA officers to hear directly from students shaping the future of the Nation’s next generation of leaders.
The meeting brought together DECA officers including President Tazbah Spruham, Vice President Robyn Billison, Secretary Makyle Dan, Historian Alison Lynch, and Apprentice Historian Rhian Hadley, along with their chapter advisor, Mr. Harvey.
DECA—Distributive Education Clubs of America—was founded in 1946 and has since grown into a national nonprofit that prepares high school and college students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Window Rock High School’s chapter continues that legacy with major achievements, including participation in international competitions held in Orlando, New York, and Los Angeles.
This year, Window Rock DECA has seen significant growth, expanding by 20 percent to reach 75 active members. The chapter has also strengthened its community involvement through Domestic Violence Awareness events and partnerships with local middle schools.
President Nygren and the DECA officers discussed the importance of strong educators, mentorship, and increasing opportunities for students across the Navajo Nation. Plans for upcoming events and continued community engagement closed out the meeting—underscoring DECA’s mission to build confidence, leadership, and career-ready skills in the next generation.
