FARMINGTON — San Juan College held its 2nd annual Restoring & Celebrating Family Wellness Elderly Conference on August 29. Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren met with elders and shared projects and priorities that have been achieved for the Navajo elderly.

This year, the conference welcomed over 230 elders visiting from 17 senior centers. It served as an opportunity for elderly, senior centers, and families to learn more about resources that are available outside of presentations that focus on healthy eating and promoting their well-being.

Several workshop sessions covered topics such as the benefits of animal companionship, driving safety for elders who still drive, and emergency preparedness to help ensure elders remain safe in their homes. These sessions enabled local programs under the Indian Health Services to collaborate and bring together elders from various communities, fostering opportunities for connection and networking.

“Shiprock tries to bring elders together once a month so they can mingle with each other, see their friends from other agencies, and to really lift up their spirits,” said Donovan Andy, Program Supervisor for Division of Aging and Long-Term Care Support.

President Nygren shared that there are two new senior centers, with four more under construction. His administration has secured millions in federal and tribal funds for aging services, prioritizing senior centers, caregiver support, and local staffing.

With increased funding for meal programs, elders continue to receive hot, reliable meals at home and at senior centers.

Mr. Andy acknowledged Sherylene Yazzie, director of the Navajo Department of Health, for ensuring hot lunches were provided for this conference.

“Today, as we gather here at this conference, I want each of you to know that you are not forgotten,” President Nygren said. “Every meal served here, every safe ride that brings you here, every improvement made to these buildings, is all for you.”
