In the community of Chinle, what is called Chi’ini’ii, meaning “where the water flows” referring to water flowing in Canyon De Chelly, celebrated Elder Day on Friday, August 15.
In celebration of the Central Agency Fair, seniors from Chinle and local senior centers gathered for presentations, a song and dance contest, a western dance contest, entertainment by James June and a warm meal.
Our elders are the root of our families that carry generations of knowledge and wisdom. This day not only celebrates our elders, but it shows appreciation for their everlasting love and support they have given us.
As Navajo Nation President, I am committed to addressing the needs of our elders and ensuring they are protected and cared for. They have nurtured, taught and guided us throughout our lives, and now it is our turn to come together and take care of them.
One effort includes securing funding to build or renovate senior centers, which will ensure every elder has a safe place to visit across the Nation. Another is Division of Aging and Long-Term Care Support (DALTCS) received Jeep Wagoneers earlier this year that provides transportation services for doctor’s appointments, to and from senior centers or food delivery to eligible seniors.
Thank you to DALTCS, Boys and Girls Club, Division of Children and Family Services, and others who helped put this event together and came together to make sure our elders our honored and valued.
To our elders, thank you for never letting us forget who we are as Navajo people. With their strength and sacrifices, we are still able to live our way of life and continue to speak our language.
-Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren
