BODAWAY/GAP, Ariz. — “To see our President come all this way, it shows he sees us. He values us. And that means everything,” said an elder who hadn’t seen a President in her community for over 20 years.

On Tuesday, July 29, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, Division of Economic Development Director, Tony Skrelunas and Tuba City Regional Business Development Office Program Manager II, Edburt Little, and roughly 30 community members came together to witness a moment of renewal, not just in ink, but in pride.

The renewal of the 25-year Business Site Lease (BSL) between the Navajo Nation and Red Mesa Trading Company was signed in the shadow of the brick building, marking a promise of security, growth and care for the area.

“This renewal and expansion at Bodaway Gap represents more than just business growth, it’s a deep commitment to serving the essential needs of this remote community, we’re particularly excited about their pledge to bring more grocery items and healthier food choices to the area, alongside improving core services like fuel and laundry. We are honored to continue our partnership” said Skrelunas.

At the busy intersection of Highway 89, Red Mesa Trading has long served as a vital pit stop for both residents and the thousands of tourists who pass through the area each year.

The lease renewal ensures that this local business, providing fuel, groceries, laundry, and community gathering space, will continue and expand to meet growing needs.

Plans include a new grocery store, an expanded gas station, upgrades to the laundromat and an emphasis on healthier food options, addressing both immediate and long-term needs of Western Navajo.

“This isn’t just about renewing land use, it’s about investing in the health, economy and community of Bodaway Gap,” said President Nygren. “Red Mesa’s growth is our community’s growth.”

As President Nygren joined the community in eating hot dogs, community members expressed that this moment is not just about the lease signing, but on being remembered. On being seen.
