WINDOW ROCK — The Navajo Department of Emergency Management (DEM) is closely monitoring a wildfire near Asaayii Lake, currently estimated at approximately 100 acres with moderate fire behavior, according to the U.S. Forest Management Office.

DEM Director Sharen Sandoval reported coordinated efforts are underway with Navajo Police Department’s Lt. Lynch, EMS supervisors, and Community Health Representatives (CHR) to ensure interagency communication and community welfare.

Air and ground crews are aggressively working to contain the fire’s northern movement by wind conditions. Resources deployed include two large air tankers, three water tenders, four Type 6 engines, and two Type 2 initial attack hand crews.

No critical infrastructure is currently threatened.

Lt. Lynch is identifying an incident command post location, should deployment become necessary. EMS has responded to a medical call involving a BIA firefighter, and Fort Defiance and Ganado teams are augmenting personnel, with Chinle on standby.

“We are prepared and proactive,” Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said. “Our priority is protecting lives, land and ensuring swift coordination as the situation develops.”
