Enrolled members of federally recognized tribal nations in Arizona now have the option to have “Native American” printed on the front of their Arizona driver license, instruction permit, or ID card.
This new designation is available through the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) under House Bill 2852, sponsored by Myron Tsosie, and officially took effect on January 1.
What You’ll Need to Update an Existing Credential:
• A new application and photo
• Proof of enrollment in a federally recognized Arizona tribe, such as:
– Enhanced Tribal Card
– Tribal Identification Card
– Tribal Certificate of Indian Blood
– Tribal or Bureau of Indian Affairs Affidavit of Birth
Those who choose this option will see “Native American” printed below the photo and signature on their credential.
