WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – The 2024 New Mexico State Softball Champions spent the morning with President Buu Nygren in the Stateroom, reminiscing about their win and aspirations for the future.
“I am very honored to be among all of you,” said Navajo Nation President Nygren. “You are all leaders; be proud of your culture, clans, and yourself. You have proved that you are an ambassador of the Navajo Nation. Carry yourselves with the belief you have within yourselves and the support from all of us here on Navajo.”
The President looked around the stateroom filled with proud family members, coaches, and staff as he honored the players for their achievements and ambassadorship of the Navajo Nation.
The team has been vital in the sport, making it to the state championships four years in a row. In 2021, they were runner-up. In 2022, they were state champions. In 2023, they were runner’s up, and in 2024, they placed as State Champions again.
“It was an honor to coach these students who have been teammates and friends since 9-10 years old,” said Assistant Coach Adrian Marruto. “As coaches, we always tell them to live for others, humble, yet hungry. They have shown so much maturity and leadership, and we are very proud.”
After sharing stories about the season, the students shared how they balanced focusing on the sport and the downtime they shared with their family, colleagues, and friends.
They also spoke of aspirations after high school, sharing their dreams of becoming a pharmacist, sports therapist, educator, and other fields.
“Seniors that are leaving, thank you for your leadership,” said President Nygren. “It is important to pass on that knowledge, hype up one another, and encourage each other to do your best. We will always be proud of you.”
