Proclamation

IN HONOR AND RECOGNITION OF FORMER CHAIRMAN OF THE NAVAJO TRIBE AND PRESIDENT OF THE NAVAJO NATION PETERSON ZAH

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation is saddened by the passing of Honorable Peterson Zah; and

WHEREAS, Honorable Peterson Zah served the Navajo People as chairman of the Navajo Tribal Council from 1983 to 1987; and

WHEREAS, Honorable Peterson Zah served as the first president of the Navajo Nation from 1991 to 1995; and

WHEREAS, Honorable Peterson Zah is beloved for his devotion to the education and professional development of generations of young and elder Navajos alike; and

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation recognizes Honorable Peterson Zah's contributions to the sovereignty of the Navajo Nation, including the creation of the Permanent Trust Fund; and

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation recognizes Honorable Peterson Zah for his dedicated leadership in this new era of Navajo democracy and tribal self-governance; and

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation offers its deepest regards and condolences to the family of Honorable Peterson Zah during this period of grief.

NOW THEREFORE, I, BUU NYGREN, President of the Navajo Nation, do hereby proclaim that all flags on the Navajo Nation shall be flown at half-staff starting at sunrise on March 9, 2023, until sunset on March 15, 2023, to honor the memory and service of the Honorable Peterson Zah.
