SANTA FE, N.M. — On Monday, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren and First Lady Jasmine Blackwater Nygren met with key New Mexico state legislature leaders to discuss the Navajo Nation’s policy positions and to meet for the first time in their official capacities.
“We appreciate Senator George Munoz, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, and Representative Patty Lundstrom, chair of the House Appropriations and Finance Committee, for the productive discussions at the state capital,” said President Nygren. “There’s a lot of work to get done both at home on the Navajo Nation and at the state level.”
President Nygren committed to fully committing and spending capital outlay dollars that directly impact Navajo communities in New Mexico. These are significant resources that help fulfill the State of New Mexico’s commitment to tribal nations, he said.
Other key issues discussed during their first meetings included the effort to enhance the responsiveness of public safety through joint- and cross-commissions and access to behavioral health programming at the local level.
Discussions with New Mexico leaders will continue through the week as the legislature begins its session.
