PROCLAMATION
RECOGNIZING APRIL 29, 2023, AS NAVAJO NATION MARINE CORPS LEAGUE DAY
Whereas, the Marine Corps League was founded in 1923 by Major General Commandant John A. Lejeune to promote the interests of the United States Marine Corps and to protect the welfare of its members; and
Whereas, the Marine Corps League is the only Federally Chartered Marine Corps related veterans organization in the country, as approved by An Act of the Seventy-Fifth Congress of the United States of America, and signed and approved by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 4, 1937; and
Whereas, Marine Corps League Detachment 736 was first chartered on November 14, 1990, and re-chartered on November 20, 2021, and was named in honor of the late Corporal Wilfred Eli Billey, a Navajo Code Talker who served with distinction in the South Pacific Theater during World War II; and
Whereas, the Navajo Nation and the Marine Corps League share common values and objectives and seek to create camaraderie among all military veterans, including Navajo Marines; and
Whereas, the 37th Annual Marine Corps League, Department of New Mexico State Convention will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2023, where all of the Marine Corps League membership of New Mexico will gather to build camaraderie and to lay the foundation for future opportunities;
Whereas, all members of the Navajo Nation are encouraged to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by the members of the Marine Corps League and to join in the efforts to build a bridge between the Navajo Nation and the Marine Corps League so that we may better serve Marine Corps and military veterans on and off the Navajo Nation.
NOW THEREFORE, I, BUU NYGREN, President of the Navajo Nation, do hereby proclaim April 29, 2023, as Navajo Nation Marine Corps League Day.
